The Psychology Behind Breast Implants

The Psychology Behind Breast Implants

Plastic surgery is never just about how you look; often it’s about how you feel about how you look. That’s why it is so important to have healthy expectations about plastic surgery and what it can do for both how you look and how you feel about your body. Are you interested in getting breast implants? Or is there another person or another reason causing you to think you need implants? The best way to determine how you’ll feel about your surgery results is to identify your motivation for wanting the surgery.

Assess your motivation using the descriptions below and give our Lubbock office a call to schedule your no-obligation appointment for Dr. Jane Rowley’s assessment and advice.

Body Image

Women who experience asymmetry or under-development in their breasts seek breast implants to look, what they feel, is “normal.” Breast implants are meant to satisfy their own eye and not others’. These women enter our Lubbock office with a healthy sense of what plastic surgery can do for them, and they leave feeling satisfied with results, finding confidence in their own bodies. If you feel your motivation comes from wanting to make changes to your physical appearance for your own satisfaction, you may have a healthy set of expectations.

Self-Esteem

A woman who wants breast implants for her boyfriend, to save her marriage, or to impress or compete with a friend often at some point finds herself disappointed in the surgery. Using breast implants to help another person feel better about your body creates a false expectation of success. When breast implants don’t fill the gap between your ideal self and your real self, you will ultimately resent the implants. If this could be you, plastic surgery may not be right for you today. It could be good to counsel with a friend and find other ways to find peace in your situation, and then return to the thought of plastic surgery when you feel that your can make the decision for yourself with healthy expectations.

Dr. Jane Rowley is the leading breast augmentation surgeon in Lubbock. She spends the amount of time needed with each patient to ensure they have the results they are looking for. Schedule your no-obligation consultation today

Different Breast Implants Options in Lubbock

Different Breast Implants Options in Lubbock

If you have made the decision to have a breast augmentation, you’re probably considering the different types, shapes, and sizes of breast implants available. Every implant comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Your final decision should be based on personal choice and preference. At Rowley Plastic Surgery in Lubbock, Dr. Jane Rowley has over twenty years of experience in breast augmentation, and she offers her patients the following options:

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants are inserted empty during your surgery and then filled with sterile salt water once they’re in place. This allows a plastic surgeon to adjust the size of the implant during surgery to achieve better symmetry. If a saline breast implant ruptures, the implant will deflate, which makes it easy to detect a leak. You can physically see the difference between an implant that is still intact and an implant that is leaking. Though leaking saline solution does not harm your body, you may need to undergo surgery to have the implant replaced. Saline implants tend to ripple a little, which is something patients should ask their surgeon about.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants have been used for years and have improved over time. The implants on the market today are quite different than those available 50 years ago. Silicone implants are pre-filled with thick silicone gel, which feels a lot like breast tissue. Most women think that silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue. A silent rupture in your silicone breast implant means a rupture that is difficult to detect because any leaking silicone tends to remain trapped in the area that forms around the implant. Though sometimes patients worry it will harm them, leaking silicone gel isn’t thought to cause any damage to the body or any long-term health problems.

Ideal Implant®

The Ideal Implant®  is structured with a baffled design that minimizes rippling and feels more like your natural breast. It has an inner shell around the inner chamber, which holds the inner saline filler, and an outer shell around the outer chamber, which holds the outer saline filler. Between these shells are one to three baffle shells. It looks like a silicone implant, but if it leaks, it acts like a saline implant.

A Look at Breast Implant Options

Not every woman has the same body type or the same desire for the shape and appearance of her breasts. Women in Lubbock have several options to consider when they are thinking about having breast implants. Knowing your options will help you make the best choice for your body and lifestyle.

Silicone Implants

Women will choose silicone implants if they are looking to have an implant with the option of a natural, teardrop shape. The gel feeling of silicone can give the implant a more natural feel. The downside of silicone is the concern of silent, undetected leakage and the health risks involved with a silicone leak.

Saline Implants

Sterile saline does not have the same health risks as silicone. And, when you have a leak with these implants, you are immediately aware of the problem. Some women think that silicone breast implants have a less natural feel and look.

Gummy Bear Implants

Another silicone implant choice, Gummy Bear implants are a high-strength silicone that holds its shape with a low rate of breakage. The high cohesiveness of these implants also means they hold their shape no matter how you are trying to lay for a comfortable night’s sleep.

The Ideal Implant®

If you are looking for an alternative to silicone but don’t like the feel of traditional saline breast implants, you now have the option of the Ideal Implant®. These saline-filled implants have different shells and chambers that reduce rippling and fluid movement giving them a more natural feel.

Women in Lubbock are all different. Each breast implant patient needs to look at her body structure and type, cosmetic goals, health concerns, and budget before choosing the best implant for her breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Jane Rowley gives patients in Lubbock so many choices as she is one of the few doctors in Texas to offer the Ideal Implant®. Dr. Rowley will thoroughly explain your breast implant options. Do You Need a Breast Lift or Breast Implants or Both?

Breast procedures are some of the most requested plastic surgery options. Women want to feel good about how they look. And, when you feel confidence in your appearance, you can have feel confidence in you. Breast plastic surgery isn’t just to give you a bigger bust size. Women who have genetically smaller breast, experience extreme asymmetry between their breasts, or feel breast sagginess after pregnancy, nursing, or aging have plastic surgery options to give them a more shapely breast appearance.

What About a Breast Lift?

A breast lift will take a sagging breast and raise it to a more youthful position. Your breast lift will not change size but will firm up the breast tissue, reposition the nipple and give your breast a symmetrical shape. If you are happy with the size of your breast and just are looking to reverse the sagging effect that age and pregnancy can have on your breasts, a lift may be the surgery you are looking for.

What About Breast Augmentation?

Whether you were born with smaller breasts or lose tissue volume with age, pregnancy, or nursing, you can enhance the size of your breasts with implants. A breast augmentation gives Lubbock women the opportunity to change the size and shape of their breasts with either saline or silicone filled implants. Implants come in many different options. Consult with your board certified surgeon about your options and expectations to find the best implant choice for you.

Can I do Both?

A breast augmentation and a breast lift can work very well in tandem with each other. Excess skin is removed in the lift, repositioning your breast tissue and nipple for a more youthful shape, while an implant then adds volume and size. The results of the two procedures can be dramatic on the right patient. Ask your doctor what your options are for a combined procedure.

A Lubbock Plastic Surgery Look at the Ideal Implant®

For women in Lubbock, plastic surgery options can vary from a tummy tuck to a facelift. But the top requested plastic surgery across the nation is breast augmentation. As women age and after having children, breasts can lose volume and their youthful shape. When you are ready to enhance and change the appearance of your breast, you will need to make several important choices. One choice with breast implants is which implant material you will choose. Silicone or saline?

Pros and Cons of Silicone

Silicone implants can have a more natural feeling and look. These implants have a lower risk of showing rippling in the tissue around the implant. Silicone implants can be more costly, can require a larger incision, and have a risk of a “silent rupture.”

Why Women Choose Saline

Where silicone implants come pre-filled, saline implants are filled and adjusted during surgery. Saline implants can require a smaller incision. If they have a leak, patients will know immediately, and there is no health risk with the leak.

The Best of Both Worlds in an Ideal Implant

Dr. Jane Rowley is proud to offer her patients the Ideal Implant® that gives the benefit of a structured, more natural feeling implant without the concerns of the possibility of a silicone leak. This implant has an inner shell and an inner chamber as well as an outer shell and outer chamber that gives the implant more control with movement. Patients benefit from smaller incisions, no silicone risk, and higher rupture strength.

Whether you choose a silicone of saline breast implant, the decision is personal and should be carefully made after a thorough discussion with your doctor. If you are looking for the best of both worlds when it comes to implant choices in Lubbock, plastic surgeon Dr. Jane Rowley is the only surgeon in Lubbock that offers her patients the Ideal Implant® option. Will my Breast Implants Feel Natural?

Wondering about the natural feeling of breast implants is a common question when considering breast enhancement plastic surgery. Lubbock women not only want a particular look from their implants, but they are also hopeful for a particular feel–a natural one. Post-surgery, women eventually stop thinking about their new breasts as implants and start considering them to be their breasts. A lot of variables contribute to this feeling. While some of those variables are psychological, let’s focus on the physical ones here.

  • Silicone or Saline

The type of implant can have a significant role in how quickly you feel back to “normal.” Softer silicone implants feel natural sooner following your plastic surgery than saline implants. But, you have different implants to try before you make that final decision. Lubbock Doctor Jane Rowley can give you the chance to feel both materials before making your choice.

  • Over or Under

The implant needs to be placed deeper than directly under your skin. So if you do not have enough breast tissue to cover the implant, the implant must be placed under the chest muscle. When placed below breast tissue but above the muscle, the implanted breast has a more natural feel. If placed under the muscle, the muscle will need time to stretch and thin out.

  • More or Less

The more natural breast tissue you have supporting the implant, the more quickly the implant will blend with your body and convey that natural look and feel. When considering plastic surgery, Lubbock patients can come into our office to get a thorough evaluation on their bodies, including an assessment of available breast tissue.

  • Smaller or Larger

The larger the implant, the longer it may take to get that natural feel back. Some implants may be so large that they will never quite obtain that feel. If your goal is to simply augment what you already have and gain or regain some shape, then, you should be careful with the size.

What Can You Do?

Apart from the psychological and physical aspects to owning your implants as your breasts, there are things that you have control over and do contribute to obtaining a natural feel.

  • Massages:  Deep massages to the implants, especially early after the surgery are important. While this is not the most comfortable thing following surgery, it is important to work the surrounding tissue, helping it feel supple and natural. And if your implant is under your chest muscle, this can help that muscle stretch and relax as well.
  • Right Surgeon: Select a surgeon who truly knows how to give you more natural results. Selecting a doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, like Dr. Rowley, will significantly increase your likelihood of achieving your desired results.
  • Patience: A natural feel can take from two to nine months post-surgery to obtain. Be patient with your body. Love your new body. And give it the time it needs to become yours in both look and feel.

Breast Implant Placement: Under or Over the Muscle

Breast augmentation in one of the leading requested plastic surgery procedures. Women want to increase their breast size or add volume and fullness to their breasts’ appearance. Breast implants can also correct asymmetry with breasts and help enhance their shapeliness. Choosing to have breast implants doesn’t come with a one-size-fits-all surgery. Patients in Lubbock need to make several decisions concerning their implants and spend plenty of time discussing their choices with their doctors. Things to consider about your implants include:

  • Size
  • Material
  • Shape
  • Placement

With so much to think about, having a board certified surgeon willing to spend the time needed to help you make the right choices for your body is imperative to your having the best possible outcome with your surgery. You probably have already thought about your size options. You may even have considered silicone vs. saline. But have you given thought to where your implant will be placed?

In general, implants placed above the muscle tend to have a more natural look and feel; however, this is not the right placement for every body type, and a natural look and feel can also be obtained for implants below the muscle. Particularly petite women with limited natural breast tissue find that placement under the muscle is necessary. Ultimately, you and your doctor should carefully review all of the pros and cons surrounding this placement in the context of your body to determine the best choice for you.

Breast Implants Under Breast Tissue

Implants placed below the breast tissue but above the chest muscle are called subglandular or subfascial.

Benefits of above muscle implants:

  • Typically less invasive than below the muscle breast implants
  • Quicker recovery because the muscle stays intact
  • No distortion from flexing muscles
  • No size limitation due to limited space under the muscle
  • Breast implants can be spaced closer together allowing for more cleavage

Disadvantages of above the muscle:

  • More likely to have visible rippling of the implant
  • Less support for the implant putting it at risk of dropping over time
  • More likely to cause stretch marks and blemishes
  • More difficult to mammogram
  • Higher risk of looking “fake”

Breast Implants Under Your Muscle

Placement under the muscle is often referred to as subpectoral.

Benefits of under the muscle:

  • Less risk of folds or ripples in the implant becoming visible
  • More tissue covering and protecting the breast implants
  • Less risk of firmness or capsular contracture

Disadvantages of under the muscle:

  • Longer recovery times
  • Typically more painful recovery
  • Interference with some physical activities like push ups or weight lifting
  • Visible flexing of the muscle over the breast implants, which can look unnatural
  • Higher-positioned implants can look unnatural

There is no right or wrong placement of your breast implant. Talk with your Lubbock doctor to review all of your options and to discuss the right fit for your body type and your personal goals. What to Consider When Choosing a Breast Implant Size

Communicating expectations about a wanted implant size is sometimes a difficult thing for patients. Patients need to have realistic expectations, and surgeons need to explain procedures and options to patients clearly. Breast implant sizes don’t just match up with a perceived bra size. As patient and doctor discuss a breast augmentation, they should consider long-term goals for the surgical result. Along with size, Lubbock women need to consider the implant material and shape that they want to be used for their breast augmentation.

Breast Implant Size and Your Body

Size can be one of the toughest topics to navigate when establishing clear expectations for your breast augmentation procedure. We often try talking about breast sizes using bra sizes, but, a cup size can look very different on different body shapes and sizes, and even a standard bra size can vary from bra brand to brand. The effect of implants can look different on different people depending on body shape and existing breast tissue. For example, your chest and shoulder width play a role in selecting the width of your implants, and going from a small A cup to a small D cup can produce very different results than going from a full B cup to a small D cup. So more than selecting a bra from the store shelf or comparing with friends to determine the right size for you, go into our Lubbock office for an in-person consultation to help you understand your options and what may be recommended for your body type.

Consider Breast Augmentation and Lifestyle

It is easy to cruise the internet and take a look around the poolside to select what you think to be the perfect size for your breast augmentation, but it is an entirely different thing living with that new body you imagined for yourself. The goal after a breast augmentation is not to look back and wish that you had either gone for a size larger or a size smaller. And size dissatisfaction post-surgery can be a result of more than just wishing your clothes fit differently. For incredibly active individuals, maintaining that activity with a new and larger chest can be difficult. If sports and exercises are a consistent part of your life, consider an implant that will give you lift and shape and fullness, but not an excessively large breast size.

More than “Bigger Is Better”

Remember that a breast augmentation is more than a competition with size. Correcting an asymmetric chest or adding back some lost fullness can bring you great satisfaction and an increase in self-confidence. Dr. Jane Rowley knows the importance of spending whatever time is needed to understand her patient’s expectations with her breast augmentation. When Do Breast Implants Start to Feel Natural?

Mommy makeover

Size and shape of your new breast implants matter for your personal satisfaction, but the feel of your breasts is also very important to your overall happiness with your procedure. When getting anything from a little lift or a total reconstruction, there are multiple factors at play determining the end-result feel of your implants. If a very natural feel is your ultimate goal, there are a few things to consider before your surgery. And if you have already had implants, these variables will also give you direction as to when you can expect to feel natural again and what you might do along the way to help your body get there faster.

  • Type of Material

Silicone implants tend to be softer than saline right from the onset. Those who get silicone implants may be more inclined to say things feel “normal” earlier than those with saline implants. Eventually saline can also feel soft, but because of the viscosity of the silicone, they have the potential to feel softer than saline even over an extended amount of time.

  • Sufficient Breast Tissue: Location and Ratio

Individuals who have inadequate natural breast tissue to support the implants need to have the implants placed under chest muscles to provide that coverage. This chest muscle needs to be stretched and thinned out over time to feel supple and soft like breast tissue. This process is not immediate, so the location of your implant can have a great effect on the overall feel of your new breasts when you first arrive home. The more natural breast tissue you have to start with, the more likely you will be able to mask the implant.

  • Patience

You choose the material, shape, and size of the final look that you want. Having healthy and realistic expectations, along with a sufficient dose of patience will go a long way toward ensuring your satisfaction with your surgery at our Lubbock facility.

Whether you are planning a single breast implant procedure or are combining it with a complete mommy makeover, Dr. Rowley will carefully listen to your cosmetic goals, so you are happy with your results. To discuss your implant choice, schedule a consultation today.

Can Smaller Breast Implants Make You Look and Feel More Natural?

Liposuction

After deciding that breast implants are for you, your next decision is settling on the right size. Unlike people looking into liposuction procedures who often have the belief that smaller is better, those seeking breast implants may or may not think that bigger is better. With the introduction of breast implants this was a common view; however, smaller implants are becoming more and more popular. So, why is bigger not always better?

A More Natural Look and Feel

Larger implants tend to draw more attention and are often identifiable as implants. A smaller implant would mean filling out your clothes comfortably and adding definition to shape without calling excessive attention to your chest.

Your Medium is My Large

Bigger or smaller aren’t always the same in comparison with others because each body type merits an individual approach in determining what looks good and what doesn’t. Dr. Rowley will carefully give you the attention you need at your evaluation appointment to discuss size and all of the facets associated with that conversation,  including shape. Finding a tailored fit for your body is incredibly important because something that looks good and natural on one person can look excessive and unnatural on another.

Too Much of a Good Thing

Getting breast implants does more than impact your appearance, it also impacts your lifestyle and ability to move. When weight is removed through liposuction, people often find that movement and exercise are much easier. Breast implants, however, add weight to your body and change your balance. Aerobic activities can be a bit tricky with larger breasts, and active individuals may find that while their new, larger breasts look great in a dress, they don’t feel great on the treadmill.

There Is No “big” or “small,” There Is Only “Just Right”

Ultimately, you need to get the breasts implants that you want. Most people who have a healthy self-image and realistic expectations of this procedure find that they are incredibly happy with their results. Women who get larger implants at the recommendation of a friend often find themselves eventually unhappy and returning for additional procedures to reduce the size of the implants. So do what makes you happy and love your body, because you’re beautiful!

Dr. Jane Rowley is your board certified Lubbock surgeon that will discuss your personal aesthetic goals with you. Schedule your consultation today.
