How a Lubbock Tummy Tuck Works for Patients of All Sizes

Nearly 40 percent of American adults are obese, according to statistics published by the CDC. If you are overweight, it can be overwhelming to think of how much time and effort it would take to get to a point where you feel satisfied with your body. Not only is it overwhelming, but sometimes it is just not feasible to lose that much weight on your own. Have you ever wondered if plastic surgery could help you get your life back? Most of the time, the best candidates for plastic surgery are those who are already close to their ideal weight; however, a new study has revealed information that could lead to a change in the profile of the typical Lubbock tummy tuck patient. The findings suggest that, if you are one of the millions of overweight or obese Americans, a tummy tuck in Lubbock is likely to significantly improve your quality of life.

Abdominoplasty and Obesity

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) conducted the study and the results were recently published in the ASPS scientific journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The researchers surveyed 46 overweight abdominoplasty patients over a period of 12 years. The patients’ average age was 49 and their average BMI (body mass index) was 32. The goals were to examine the patients’ experience and discover their rate of satisfaction with the procedure.

Most of the survey participants underwent abdominoplasty, but 20 percent of them had a procedure called a panniculectomy. A panniculectomy removes hanging skin and fat that lies on the lower abdomen, much like a tummy tuck. The main difference between the two procedures is that with a Lubbock tummy tuck, your surgeon will also tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall that may have been previously stretched or weakened. Women who have had children often seek abdominoplasty to restore their figures after pregnancy. Patients who are obese or significantly overweight pursue panniculectomy when the fat on their lower belly inhibits their ability to function. Both panniculectomy and a tummy tuck in Lubbock are highly beneficial surgeries for people who struggle with excess skin and fat on the abdomen.

The Results Are In

97 percent of RealSelf community members say a tummy tuck is “worth it,” but most of those patients are not obese. Most plastic surgeries are not recommended for obese patients because of the increased risk of complications. The ASPS researchers set out to explore how these skin and fat removal procedures would affect people who are overweight. At the end of the 12 year period, the study participants reported very high levels of satisfaction with their surgeries.

With almost half of the participants reporting surgery-related problems, the results of the research also revealed a high occurrence of complications. 39 percent of patients experienced minor complications that were resolved easily, and 9 percent had to undergo additional surgery because of major complications. Still, most of the patients were very happy with their decision to have their procedure, and many of them even went on to lose more weight afterwards. 97 percent of the participants said that if they could go back and make the decision again, they would still choose to have the surgery. The researchers concluded:

“Abdominoplasty and panniculectomy in overweight and obese patients are associated with an elevated complication rate, yet patient satisfaction is overwhelmingly high, suggesting the viability of body contouring procedures in this patient population.”

Get Your Life Back With a Tummy Tuck in Lubbock

This research presents an interesting look at how plastic surgery can benefit and even change the lives of people who are overweight. Getting rid of excessive skin and fat can help these patients dive into a weight loss program and set them on the right path to healthier living. A tummy tuck in Lubbock can also provide them welcome relief from uncomfortable and inconvenient skin folds. With an improved ability to move, tummy tuck patients who were overweight will find it easier and more enjoyable to exercise, giving them even greater health benefits.

Whether you are overweight or not, a tummy tuck can solve the problem of excess abdominal skin and fat. If you have loose skin leftover from a significant weight loss, the surgery can tighten the abdominal wall and flatten your tummy by eliminating the extra flab. Women whose bellies have been stretched by pregnancy can restore their bodies with the procedure. A Lubbock tummy tuck can work for many types of patients with different needs.
