Nicotine is a powerful vasoconstrictor, meaning it can cause tightening of small blood vessels. Nicotine can seriously impair wound healing and increase complications in procedures where skin is elevated off of the blood supply and tightened. These procedures include mastopexy (breast lift), breast reduction, facelifts, and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). If you are considering any of these procedures, Dr. Rowley requires that the patient cease all nicotine products for six weeks preoperatively and 2-3 weeks postoperatively. This may sound harsh, but if you do not feel that you are able to be off of nicotine for that period of time, it is not in your interest to seek a consultation for these procedures.
