Rejuvenate Your Feminine Side With a Breast Lift

Do you remember the last time you looked in the mirror and thought how great and perky your breasts looked? Maybe it was before you had children. Perhaps it was before you lost weight. Or perhaps, like many women, you have never felt that way about your breasts. Your breasts should help you feel beautiful and feminine, not embarrassed or self-conscious. Many women deal with too little or too much volume, sagging, and other breast issues. With a breast lift performed by a skilled board-certified plastic surgeon, you can have the breasts that help you feel more confident when you look in the mirror.

Plastic Surgery for the Breasts

It’s easy to name the things we don’t love about our bodies. Many of those imperfections can be resolved with simple improvements in our diet and exercise habits. Whether you want to lose weight or you want to tone up your muscles, you have the ability to reach those goals on your own. With breast problems, however, it’s a different story. You can’t use exercise or a healthy diet to fix sagging breasts. Some cosmetic issues require the talents of a well-qualified plastic surgeon. If your breasts droop and are taking your confidence down with them, it might be time to look into mastopexy

Understanding Mastopexy

Mastopexy, more often called a breast lift, is a surgical procedure that corrects sagging and drooping of the breasts. The procedure has seen tremendous growth in popularity, increasing in demand by 114 percent since 2000 (according to the latest statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons).  Women seek out the surgery when factors such as aging, gravity, pregnancy, or weight loss have caused their breasts to sag, droop, or appear deflated.

A breast lift is a procedure that involves multiple steps to achieve a more youthful look. The removal of extra skin and breast tissue allows your breasts to sit in a higher position. Stretched areolas are reduced in size to match the new shape of the breasts. The nipple is also moved up to sit higher on the breast to help with forward projection and help your breasts look perkier overall.

Breast Lift Techniques

You can choose from several different types of incisions to rejuvenate your breasts. The method you select will depend on the results you want and the amount of ptosis (or sagging) you have. Do some research and talk to your plastic surgeon about which approach would best fit your needs.

  • Crescent Lift: This method is one of the lesser-used ways to achieve a breast lift, as it addresses the mildest amount of sagging. The crescent-shaped incision follows the top half edge of the areola, resulting in minimal scarring. Plastic surgeons use a crescent lift when the patient has very little sagging or minor drooping of the nipples. It can be used when combining a lift with breast augmentation.
  • Donut Lift: Patients with fairly mild sagging benefit from the single-scar donut lift (also known as a peri-areolar lift). The incision outlines the outer edge of the areola. Like the crescent lift, it addresses a minor amount of sagging and is often performed in addition to breast enhancement with implants.
  • Lollipop Lift: The most common of all breast lift techniques, the lollipop or vertical lift is meant to resolve moderate sagging. This method involves more than one incision, but it creates more dramatic results than the single-scar lifts. Your plastic surgeon makes cuts around the outside circle of the areola and vertically down the bottom half of the breast in a lollipop-like shape.
  • Anchor Lift: Women with tubular, pendulous, or severely sagging breasts may need a more substantial amount of skin and tissue removed. Your plastic surgeon achieves this by making incisions around the areola, vertically down the bottom half of the breast, and horizontally under the crease of the breast. Breast reduction patients often benefit from the anchor lift.

Every approach to mastopexy involves scarring. Fortunately, the scars will fade over time if they are properly cared for. And, no one will even be able to see the scars except for you and those who see you without clothes. According to RealSelf, 95 percent of women say the procedure is “worth it.” Most patients find that the improvements in their breasts are more than worth the hidden scars. Talk to your doctor about whether the advantages of mastopexy would be worth it for you.

Breast Lift Candidates

If you are unsure if mastopexy is right for you, a simple test you can do at home can offer more insight. Place a pencil horizontally under the crease of your breast. If the pencil stays put when you let go, you may have enough sagging for a lift. Additionally, if your answer is yes to any of the following questions, you may want to talk to your doctor about the possibility of a lift for your breasts.

  • Do your nipples point down instead of forward?
  • Are you unhappy with how much your breasts sag or droop?
  • Do your nipples sit below the crease of your breasts?
  • Are your breasts different sizes?
  • Are your breasts long, flat, or pendulous?

Pairing a Breast Lift With Other Procedures

Sometimes a lift is all that is needed to fix what bothers women about their breasts. But, if you want to add volume or reduce your bust size, you should consider adding a breast augmentation or a reduction to your lift to achieve those results. A lift alone will rejuvenate your breasts, but it will not change their size by much.

Breast Augmentation

If your breasts have only mild sagging, the addition of breast implants may be enough to provide the lift you need. Breasts that sag more severely and lack the volume you want can be transformed by combining mastopexy with breast augmentation. After having these two procedures done together, your breasts can be fuller, perkier, and have more forward projection. Women have several options for breast implants, including saline, silicone gel, and IDEAL IMPLANT ® Structured Breast Implants. Talk to your doctor about which type would best help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

Breast augmentation and mastopexy can be an effective combination for many women, but they do not work together perfectly for every patient. Mastopexy may not be the best choice for women who want very large implants, because the weight of those implants can cause the breasts to sag even further. Your plastic surgeon can advise you on whether the combination of breast augmentation and a breast lift is right for you.

Breast Reduction

When most people think of cosmetic breast issues, they imagine breasts that are too small or flat. However, there are a great number of women who feel their breasts are too large. An oversized chest is more than just a burden; it can lead to pain and discomfort throughout the body. Women with very large breasts often suffer from problems including:

  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Painful grooves from bra straps digging into shoulders
  • Skin irritation or rash underneath the breasts
  • Embarrassment about breast size
  • Decreased mobility
  • Neurologic symptoms including tingling and numbness in the arms and hands

If your breasts are too big for your liking or cause you pain, reducing their size can bring much-needed relief. A breast reduction is almost always done with a lift because the surgeries complement each other so well. Plastic surgeons perform the procedures in tandem to provide a more proportionate and shapely bust. The reduction removes excess breast tissue and skin, and the lift elevates the areola and nipple to a more normal position. Stretched areolas are re-sized. The end result is a lighter, smaller, perkier bust and a happier, more confident patient. In fact, Dr. Rowley’s breast reduction patients are some of her happiest clients because of the immediate relief they feel after surgery.

Options For a Mommy Makeover

We love our babies and would do anything for them, but that does not mean we love all the effects childbearing has on our bodies. The breasts begin to sag, deflate, or can even balloon up after breastfeeding. The tummy, after being stretched to the limit, often has a hard time recovering. Loose skin, separated abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat are also common problems for women who have gone through pregnancy and childbirth. A breast lift is a popular procedure for mothers to choose when they are finished having children. Other procedures often included in a mommy makeover are:

  • Liposuction – As excited as you may be when you see your pre-baby weight back on the scale, you may not feel that same enthusiasm when you look in the mirror. This dissatisfaction happens for many women whose bodies still carry areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction targets these specific spots and gets rid of the fat to reveal and enhance the natural beauty of your own curves. Although it is not a weight loss procedure, liposuction can provide exceptional results on the right patient in the right areas of the body.
  • Tummy tuck – Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, has dramatic effects on the abdominal area. After pregnancy or weight loss, the skin around the belly can sag. Sit-ups, planks, and crunches can help strengthen your core, but they can’t get rid of the hanging skin. A tummy tuck removes loose skin and fat, and tightens ab muscles to give you a flat, lean stomach. Although it is not a substitute for healthy eating or exercise, a tummy tuck removes the flabby skin that so many of us seem to gain after pregnancy.

Combining liposuction or a tummy tuck with a procedure like a breast lift can transform your entire look. Patients have found greater satisfaction with their appearance and enhanced confidence in their everyday lives with plastic surgery. If you want to get your pre-baby body back or just want to look better in a swimsuit, talk to your doctor about which procedures could benefit you.

Breast Issues, Solved

Eating right and getting proper exercise can help with many of the things we want to change about our bodies, but breast complaints are on a different level. It is not easy to feel confident in your appearance when you no longer fill out the bras you wore before you had children. It is not fun to carry around heavy, attention-getting breasts around all the time. Sagging breasts do not often help us feel beautiful or feminine. When you are ready to move past these or other common breast issues, plastic surgery may be able to help. A breast lift can restore a youthful, perky look to your breasts and make your confidence soar. Remember to consider the following when deciding to undergo mastopexy:

  • Decide if you need the procedure. Ask yourself the right questions and even do the pencil test at home to see just how much sagging you have.
  • A lift will not make your cup size go up or down. If you want to add or take away breast volume, talk to your doctor about breast augmentation or reduction in conjunction with mastopexy.
  • You may be correcting problems with your breasts caused by having children. If you have other areas that would benefit from cosmetic surgery, a mommy makeover might be a convenient way to achieve your results.

Achieving a Naturally Beautiful Look With Breast Implants

If you are serious about breast augmentation surgery, you have probably spent some time imagining what your life will be like with your new breasts. It’s exciting to think of the flattering new clothes you’ll wear and the confidence you will feel wearing them. Shopping for new bras and finally filling out that bikini top are definitely worth looking forward to, but you may still have some questions. There is no doubt you will look great, but many women still want to preserve the natural feel of their real breasts. Your breast augmentation outcome depends on several variables. By clearly communicating your expectations with your plastic surgeon, you can achieve the look and feel you desire.

Will They Look Fake?

Breasts with implants feel different than those without. But “different” does not have to mean the same thing as fake. In the past, some breast implants did look and feel fake because they were too big and perfectly round. An obvious, over-the-top look was the style back then, but subtle breast enhancement is what’s trending today. Progress in technology and surgical techniques have made achieving a more natural, feminine look much more of a reality. You can enlarge your breasts and still look like yourself. An experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Jane Rowley can help you select the right options for your implants that will create a tailored fit for your body.

Achieving a Natural Feel

Women’s preferences vary widely when it comes to the appearance of their breast implants. However, all breast augmentation patients want their results to feel like the real thing. No one wants her breasts to feel artificial. With enough research and planning, you can have augmented breasts that are realistic to the touch. The more existing breast tissue you have, the less conspicuous your implants will be. But, if you don’t have much natural breast tissue, there are still options to help give you beautiful results that don’t feel fake.

Variables That Matter

Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure. At your consultation, you should explore in depth all the factors that contribute to the results of your breast implants. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about your options; understanding your choices is paramount to achieving the results you want. Here’s a look at some of the variables that will impact your surgical outcome.

Your Plastic Surgeon

Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) makes all the difference in your breast enlargement results. These top-tier surgeons have been through the proper training and had the education they need to perform your procedure safely. Your doctor should be open with you and be willing to address all of your concerns. Furthermore, it is also a good idea to select a surgeon with plenty of experience in your procedure. A well-qualified plastic surgeon can give you beautiful results and make your surgical journey as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Implant Type

The type of implant you choose will greatly impact your breast enhancement results. Although it is entirely up to you, it is a decision that is best made with your doctor’s help. Your surgeon can recommend which type of breast implant will help you reach your aesthetic goals. Breast implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel. There is no wrong choice, but each has different advantages and drawbacks.

  • Silicone gel implants: These implants usually feel softer, like a real breast, because of the viscosity of the silicone gel. Silicone gel implants are a popular choice for women considering breast augmentation because of their realistic look and feel. However, patients who choose these implants must accept the risk of silent rupture. When a silicone gel implant leaks, it can go undetected. The sticky gel can make its way into the body, but cannot be absorbed by it. That is why the FDA recommends patients with silicone gel implants have an MRI every 2-3 years to check for silent rupture.
  • Saline implants: Implants filled with saline lack the structure and firmness necessary to make them feel natural. In fact, many women say they feel similar to a water balloon. They are also susceptible to wrinkling and rippling, especially in women with little or no breast tissue of their own. On the other hand, saline implants do not put you at risk for silent rupture. Saline is simply a sterile saltwater solution that is easily absorbed by the body in the event of rupture.
  • IDEAL IMPLANT ® Structured Breast Implants: The IDEAL IMPLANT is one of the latest innovations on the breast implant market. It was designed to fill the aesthetic needs of breast augmentation patients while still giving them peace of mind. The IDEAL IMPLANT is filled with saline, but has a unique internal structure that gives it a natural look and feel. If you like the way silicone gel breast implants look, but don’t want to worry about silent rupture, then the IDEAL IMPLANT may be right for you. As an experienced IDEAL IMPLANT Premier Surgeon, Dr. Jane Rowley is proud to offer her patients the latest in breast implant technology. Learn more about the benefits of the IDEAL IMPLANT in the video below.

Implant Placement

Breast implants can be placed over or under the chest muscles. There are advantages and drawbacks to each method of placement. The technique you choose will be based on your goals, body type, and lifestyle. Submuscular placement tends to look more realistic because the overlying tissue creates a more natural slope to the breast. But, there are some important things to consider before you make the decision. Having your implants placed beneath the chest muscles can mean a longer or more uncomfortable recovery. You may also experience implant movement during vigorous exercise.

If you lack sufficient breast tissue to support implants, they may need to go over the muscle (which isn’t a bad thing). Subglandular (or over the muscle) placement often appears and feels more artificial. Implants placed over the chest muscles can also cause mammography to be slightly less accurate. But, the method does offer a quicker recovery and less movement of the implants during physical exercise.

Implant Size

Choosing the right size for the unique shape of your body is critical when a natural look is important to you. For example, thinner women with small breasts may want to opt for medium-sized implants if they want to have a natural looking result. Breast implant sizes range from 80 cc all the way up to 800 cc. When describing your ideal breast size, it is best to avoid talking in terms of bra cup sizes. Bras are inconsistent in their sizing; a woman who wears a C cup in one type of bra could wear a DD in a bra made by another manufacturer. So, how do you accurately convey your end goal to your plastic surgeon? First, try a couple of things at home.

Uncooked rice can help you get a feel for the right implant size. Generally, one cup of rice equals about 236 cc. Cut a pair of pantyhose into a 12-inch section and discard the foot. Tie off the bottom and measure the rice, starting with about 250 ml. Pour the rice into the pantyhose, tie off the top end, and shape the sizer into a circle. Place it in your bra for a few hours and see how you feel with the volume you’re trying out.

You can also do a similar experiment with water. When measuring out the water, keep in mind that 1 ml equals 1 cc. Instead of pantyhose, fill plastic sandwich bags with water to provide a visual for how your new breasts might look. These at-home tests can give you an idea of what different breast implant sizes would feel like. Trying on some of your favorite outfits and swimwear will give you an even better picture of yourself with implants. If your rice or water bags feel too large or too small, start over with a different amount. Doing these simple things at home can help you clearly communicate your wishes to your doctor.

What You Can Do After Surgery

Everyone loves a good DIY solution, but before you try anything on your own, make sure to get the OK from your doctor. One thing some surgeons recommend to do at home to make your breast implants feel softer and more natural is to massage them. Gently rubbing the implants will help create a soft capsule of scar tissue around them. This allows the breasts to move more naturally, aids in the healing of the incision, and prevents the formation of a hard capsule around the implant. Two to three times a day, gently massage the breast in a circular motion to soften and stretch the area of the breast implant. Talk to your doctor about the specifics to get a better idea of what to do and how massage helps.

Should You Seek Advice from Others?

With all of the choices you’ll need to make about your breast augmentation, it can be helpful to talk through your decisions with people you trust. Just be careful about how much stock you put into other people’s opinions; yours is the only one that really matters when it comes to your plastic surgery. If you’re concerned about what your partner might think about your breast implants, it is best to have an honest conversation about how your body will change.

The jury is out on whether most men like breast implants; preferences are all across the board. But if we are to take any hint from the way women are portrayed in the media, we can assume a good portion of men do like them. It is not uncommon for men to be pleased with their partner’s new breasts because of the way it boosts her self-image. When a woman is happy with the way she looks, it builds her confidence in almost every aspect of her life. The important thing is not to dwell on what others will think about the choices we make with our bodies. While it is healthy to include your partner in your plastic surgery journey, the ultimate decision is up to you.

Natural Breast Enhancement

Advancements in breast augmentation techniques and technology have made it possible for women to enjoy enhanced breasts that do not feel fake. From selecting a qualified doctor to choosing the right implants, you have the control over your surgical outcome. If you want your breast implants to have that natural look and feel, you should consider these important factors:

  • Your plastic surgeon’s training and experience – make sure they are board-certified.
  • Implant type, location, and size – spend time discussing these options with your doctor.
  • Implant massage – massage could help soften the feel of your implants. Make sure to clear this with your doctor first.
  • Include your partner – talking through decisions together can help, but the final say should be yours.

If you want a natural look and feel for your augmented breasts, you’ll need to spend some time doing your homework. Breast enhancement is a highly personalized procedure. The more information you have about your breast implant options, the more likely you are to be thrilled with your results. You don’t have to end up with a fake looking bust with an artificial feel. When you want to feel like yourself, only with more volume in your chest, a highly experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Rowley can help you to achieve your goals.

Breast Augmentation in Lubbock and Other Breast Procedures that Build Confidence

Confidence is one of the most attractive qualities a person can have. People who have a healthy love for themselves have a way of drawing others in and enjoying those relationships more. Of course, confidence is more than just skin-deep; but there’s no denying that feeling good about how you look has a significant impact on how you think of yourself as a whole. Unfortunately, a vast majority of women have difficulty achieving that level of confidence. Looking in the mirror is a part of the day that many of them do not look forward to. When there is something that bothers you about your appearance, it can be a struggle to overcome that feeling. Whether you are interested in liposuction, a tummy tuck, or breast augmentation in Lubbock, Rowley Plastic Surgery offers procedures to fit the needs of every woman’s size and shape.

A Women’s Health Issue

According to a recent study published in the journal, Body Image, 71 percent of women are unhappy with the size of their breasts. The findings are based on a Breast Size Satisfaction Survey of 18,541 women from 40 nations across the globe. A woman’s breasts are often intimately connected to the way she feels about herself, and when she has negative emotions about them, it harms her self-esteem. The introduction to the study states:

“If [a woman’s] chest is the house of her being, from which radiates her energy to meet the world, her breasts are also entwined with her sense of self. […] For many women, if not all, breasts are an important component of body self-image; a woman may love them or dislike them, but she is rarely neutral.”

The researchers also discovered that women who were unhappy with their breast size were less likely to practice regular breast self-exams. A positive association with your chest can improve your physical and emotional well-being, as a little self-love can translate into better health habits for the long run. Dissatisfaction with your breasts is not something you have to live with. If your breasts cause you to feel self-conscious about the way you look, several options can help, including breast augmentation in Lubbock. Whether you feel your breasts are too big, too small, or any size in between, plastic surgery can boost your confidence and enhance your inner and outer beauty.

Why Breast Augmentation?

Celebrities are not the only ones getting breast implants; in 2019, plastic surgeons in the U.S. performed 299,715 breast augmentations. Women of many different backgrounds, ages, sizes, and shapes choose breast augmentation as a way to add volume to their breasts. Some are mothers who want to restore the look of their breasts that have changed after pregnancy. Others feel uncomfortable with their asymmetrical breasts. Many women are unhappy with the size of their bust because it seems out of proportion with the rest of their bodies. Breast augmentation in Lubbock can resolve all of these concerns. Other benefits of breast enhancement include:

  • Overall safety of the procedure. Breast augmentation is a safe, routine surgery with low risk of complications for healthy patients.
  • Variety of options. Patients can choose from a variety of implant shapes and sizes to fit their personal preferences. Implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel. Depending on your breast anatomy and your preferences, your plastic surgeon can place your implants either under or over the chest muscle.
  • Quick recovery. You’ll only need two or three days to recover from breast augmentation surgery. After four-to-six weeks, most women get the green light from their doctors to resume full physical activity.
  • High rate of patient satisfaction. According to RealSelf, 98 percent of women with breast implants find the surgery to be “worth it.” Breast augmentation in Lubbock has many physical, emotional, and social benefits.

Breast Implant Options

The decisions you make about your breast implants are highly personal. Your priorities, tastes, and body type will all play a role in what you choose for your breast augmentation in Lubbock. Aside from selecting a well-qualified plastic surgeon, picking the right type of breast implant is perhaps the most important thing you can do to influence your outcome. Here is a breakdown of the implant options available to breast augmentation patients:

Saline Implants

In 2019, 15 percent of breast enlargement procedures used saline breast implants. This device is filled with sterile salt water after it is inserted during surgery. Saline implants are an option for women 18 and older who want to surgically increase the volume of their breasts. Aesthetic drawbacks of saline implants include a less natural appearance, and the tendency to wrinkle and ripple.

Silicone Gel Implants

As the overwhelmingly popular choice for breast augmentation patients, silicone gel implants offer aesthetic benefits that women want. Their silicone gel filling gives them a realistic look and feel, but it also presents the possibility of silent rupture (undetected leakage). The FDA has approved silicone gel implants for breast augmentation in women age 22 and older and recommends these patients get MRIs every other year to check for silent rupture.

IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants

The IDEAL IMPLANT is the latest in breast implant technology. It combines the peace of mind of saline with the aesthetic benefits of silicone gel implants to give women an option that allows them to feel beautiful and secure. Dr. Rowley is proud to be an IDEAL IMPLANT Premiere Surgeon for her patients who want breast augmentation in Lubbock. What to Expect From Breast Enhancement Surgery

The weeks leading up to your breast augmentation procedure are an exciting time. Patients often feel a mixture of nerves, anticipation, and excitement as they prepare for their surgery. However, knowing what to expect can help bring a sense of calm as you approach your operation. Breast augmentation in Lubbock typically takes about an hour and requires general anesthesia. The size of your incision depends on the type of implants you choose, but for most women, it is about two inches long under the crease of the breasts. After your procedure, you should have someone drive you home and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. Pain during recovery varies from person to person, but it is easily managed with doctor-prescribed medications. And, as a bonus, a relatively easy recovery means you will be able to enjoy your plastic surgery results without much delay.

Breast Reduction

While the most popular plastic surgery procedure may be breast augmentation in Lubbock, not every patient wants to add to her breasts. In fact, the Body Image Breast Size Satisfaction Survey found that 23 percent of women wished their breasts were smaller. Women who feel burdened by their breasts can find relief with breast reduction surgery. Overly large breasts often cause neck, back, and shoulder pain, as well as other health issues. Even if there are no related health problems, women often get tired of the unwanted stares and attention to their chests. It can also be challenging to find clothes that fit well. All of these downsides contribute to problems with self-esteem and lower quality of life. Talk to your doctor if you feel your large breasts are getting in the way of the life you want to live. Here’s how the surgery works:

  • Extra skin and fat are removed through incisions made on the breast and around the areola. The type of incision you get depends on how much tissue needs to go.
  • The breasts are lifted and the nipple and areola are moved up to a position that fits the new shape of the breast. The areola is often made smaller as well.
  • Immediately after surgery, patients enjoy the results of having a heavy weight lifted from their chests. Complete healing takes up to six weeks, but you can go back to work after 10-14 days. Scars will be noticeable, but usually fade well over time and are easily hidden beneath swimwear.

Some of Dr. Rowley’s most satisfied clients are her breast reduction patients. Increased mobility, an enhanced appearance, and relief from a burdensome chest give them a freedom they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. Watch the video below for more information on breast reduction:

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast reduction patients always receive a lift when they undergo their procedure, but you can also opt to have a breast lift on its own (or you can add it to your breast augmentation in Lubbock). A breast lift is for women who have significant sagging or drooping of their breasts. When you place a pencil horizontally under the crease of your breast, does it stay put? If so, you may have enough sagging to benefit from a lift. The procedure lifts, tightens, and rejuvenates the bust by removing excess skin and reshaping the breast tissue. Nipples are also moved to a higher, more natural position to match the uplifted breast.

A breast lift results in a more youthful, perky chest and a greater sense of confidence to go with it. If you have breasts that are sagging, pendulous, tubular, or have stretched or downward pointing nipples, you may be a good candidate for a breast lift. Learn more about mastopexy in the following video:

Breast Reconstruction

Rebuilding confidence after cancer is an important part of the healing process. For many women, this means pursuing plastic surgery for the breasts to reconstruct their feminine figure. Cancer patients who undergo breast surgery as part of their treatment have several options for breast reconstruction surgery. This procedure often involves breast augmentation in Lubbock and a breast lift. The goal is to rebuild the shape of the breasts to help women feel more comfortable with their bodies after cancer. If you are having a surgical cancer treatment such as a lumpectomy or mastectomy, talk to your doctors about the timing of breast reconstruction surgery. Some women have the procedures at the same time; others delay reconstruction until after they’ve had more time to heal.

Do it For You

One of the most important things when considering any cosmetic breast procedure is that you should do it for you, and no one else. Disconnect from other people’s opinions and focus on what the surgery could do for you. Will it improve your self-confidence? Will you feel better about your body in and out of your clothes? Will it help you feel like yourself again? You need to be willing to ask yourself the hard questions (and give honest answers) when it comes to making any permanent changes to your body. Talk to your doctor about your hopes and expectations for results from these procedures:

  • Enlarging the breasts with breast augmentation in Lubbock
  • Breast reduction to make the breasts smaller and more proportionate with the rest of the body
  • Breast lift for sagging breasts
  • Breast reconstruction for cancer patients who need reshaping or rebuilding of the breasts due to treatment surgery

Confidence comes from within. It’s about loving yourself and feeling comfortable with who you are. Many women feel strongly about the appearance of their breasts, and whether you wish yours were bigger, smaller, or less droopy, plastic surgery with Dr. Rowley can bring greater satisfaction and build confidence. When you feel good about the way you look, it gives you the freedom to focus on the things you care about most.

Plastic Surgery in Lubbock: Options for Liposuction

The phrase “plastic surgery” seems to bring up a variety of emotions. Some people may feel pride or excitement, while others feel anxious or uncertain about the topic. If you fall into the latter group, you’re not alone. But cosmetic surgery does not have to be intimidating. While all surgery comes with recovery time and some risks, you have many different options. At Rowley Plastic Surgery in Lubbock, you can achieve dramatic cosmetic changes without the anxiety that often comes with major surgery.

Small Changes, Big Improvements

One such procedure is liposuction. On the right patient, liposuction can have an incredible effect on body contour. It enhances your figure in such a natural way that your friends may assume you look slim because you’ve lost a few extra pounds. Have you ever heard that dynamite comes in small packages? Dr. Jane Rowley offers small cosmetic surgery procedures that can result in dynamite improvements to your physical appearance.

Why Liposuction?

The benefits of a healthy diet and regular exercise seem to be never-ending, but they can’t always give you the figure you desire. It can be frustrating to spend time and money at the gym or on a home workout regimen, only to not get the slimming results you hoped for. You could never miss a workout, and you may even reach your goal weight; but what happens when the fat on your thighs just won’t budge? When nothing else seems to work, liposuction can be an effective way to finally blast that stubborn fat.

Whether you have one small location treated or multiple areas of your body, liposuction can drastically improve your self-esteem. Think of how a new top or fresh manicure can make your whole day. Now imagine having that feeling every day with your newfound confidence and sleek silhouette after having plastic surgery in Lubbock. It can be so freeing when you no longer feel the need for those expensive contouring underwear or other means of hiding fat. With liposuction, you have nothing to hide. Even if you are targeting one small area of your body with liposuction, it will still have an incredible impact on your confidence in your physical appearance. Watch the video below for more information on the procedure.

Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is an attractive cosmetic option for people who struggle with stubborn areas of fat on their bodies. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S. More than 265,000 Americans had the surgery in 2019, which is three percent more than in 2018. When you’re unhappy with your figure and you feel like diet and exercise just aren’t cutting it, now might be the right time to consider this popular plastic surgery in Lubbock. Liposuction might be a good option for you if:

  • You are in good health
  • You do not smoke (or can stop smoking before and after the procedure)
  • You can maintain a stable, consistent weight
  • You are within 30% of your ideal weight
  • You have good skin elasticity
  • You have reasonable expectations for results

Your plastic surgeon can evaluate your skin to determine how well it would respond to liposuction based on its elasticity. Consult with your board-certified plastic surgeon to learn how you could benefit from liposuction.

How Does Liposuction Work?

Liposuction is for people who have areas of stubborn fat on their bodies that resist continued efforts in diet and exercise. This plastic surgery in Lubbock targets these specific spots and gets rid of excess fat. For smaller areas of fat, liposuction is done during an outpatient appointment with the use of local anesthetics. Larger areas that cover more of the body may require general anesthesia. Small incisions are made, and a thin tube (called a cannula) is used to suction out the fat. The timeframe for recovery is fairly rapid as most people can return to work after 2-3 days; however, minor to moderate pain and swelling can last 4-6 weeks. For more details on what your liposuction experience might look like, watch the video below.

Your Options for Liposuction

We are often our own worst critics – when we look in the mirror, we notice even the smallest areas of our body and focus on our imperfections. Dr. Rowley tells all of her liposuction patients that although she can remove fat from anywhere on the body, it is what happens to the skin after the procedure that makes the greatest impact on the final results. Some areas of the body are more prone to poor skin elasticity and may appear saggy after fat is suctioned out. These areas typically include the inner thighs, abdomen, and the arms. If you struggle with persistent fat in these locations, talk to your doctor about other options that may work for you.

When used on the right patient in the right areas, liposuction is a great way to help improve the contour of the body. It is important for patients considering plastic surgery in Lubbock to remember that liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, but the changes it makes can have a significant impact on your overall look. Below are some of the areas that respond best to liposuction.

  • Torso – Your body may be the type that holds onto pockets of fat around the back and upper torso. These fat pockets can be more visible when accentuated by bras or swimming suits. Rather than cover up with baggy shirts or long sleeves, consider liposuction as a way to trim the fat off of your torso.
  • Jawline – Your jaw and neck can show signs of aging, and pockets of fat around the chin can give you the dreaded double chin. Dr. Jane Rowley has precision skills and tools to sculpt and slim your jawline, chin, and upper neck. This reshaping can take years off your appearance and give you an overall slimmer look.
  • Breasts – A traditional breast reduction is the plastic surgery in Lubbock that removes breast tissue and fat to decrease your breast size. Liposuction can reduce breast weight and size by removing fatty tissue when only a small change is wanted with minimal scarring. Be sure to ask your plastic surgeon about your breasts’ skin elasticity to determine whether liposuction is the ideal method for reducing their size.
  • Outer Thighs – With age or following pregnancy, fitting into your favorite pair of jeans can become something of a struggle. This is because the outer thighs are a common area for women to store extra fat. Even women with slim body frames can develop a thickness around their thighs and buttocks over time. With liposuction, the hips and thighs can be made to appear less wide.
  • Male Chest – Just as women find new freedom and confidence with a breast reduction, men are finding the same satisfaction through the reshaping of their chests. Gynecomastia, or the development of breasts in a man, can stem from hormonal changes throughout life. Liposuction can offer men a firmer, trimmer chest and torso by reducing the appearance of female breasts.

Areas to Avoid

If your problem area is not included in the list above, don’t panic. Your surgeon should be able to communicate clearly with you about whether your needs can be met with liposuction, or perhaps through another type of plastic surgery in Lubbock. From over 20 years of experience, Dr. Rowley knows which areas will respond best to the procedure.

“Areas that do not do well are typically the inner thighs, the abdomen (especially after pregnancy), and the arms. It is important that patients do not view this as a weight loss tool. It is for localized areas of fat and it can give exceptional and dramatic results if used on the right patient in the right areas.”

-Dr. Jane Rowley

Types of Liposuction

Just as you have choices for the areas you can target with liposuction, there are also options for the method your surgeon uses. For plastic surgery in Lubbock, techniques and technology are continually advancing and have made the procedure very safe and effective. The skill and experience of your plastic surgeon will make the biggest difference in the results of your treatment, not necessarily the technique you choose. Consider some of the most common forms of liposuction:

  • Tumescent: During tumescent liposuction, your doctor will inject a fluid into the fat that is to be removed. The fluid helps minimize blood loss and discomfort and acts as a local anesthetic.
  • Ultrasound Assisted: With a special cannula that vibrates, ultrasound energy is used to break up larger amounts of fat to liquefy them and make them easier to remove. This type of liposuction can be administered either above the skin or beneath it.
  • Laser Assisted: Subcutaneous fat can also be liquefied through the use of laser technology. Some patients opt for this method because it is minimally invasive and it results in less swelling and bruising than traditional techniques.
  • Suction Assisted: Your plastic surgeon may use a tool that resembles a vacuum to suck out unwanted fat.

It is important to keep in mind that no matter which liposuction technique you choose, none of them are meant to be a weight loss procedure. A talented plastic surgeon’s goal for liposuction patients is to sculpt and enhance the natural contours of the body. If the number on your scale is what you most want to change, it might be wise to consider other options for weight loss before you put on the finishing touches with liposuction.

More Reasons to Consider Liposuction

Having sweaty armpits is something that can cause embarrassment for even the most confident of people. It is estimated that three percent of Americans deal with axillary hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating from the armpits. If you have the misfortune of sweating through every shirt you own, liposuction plastic surgery in Lubbock may be able to offer relief by removing those troublesome sweat glands. With a quick office visit and almost zero recovery time, you could be on your way to feeling more self-assured – even when you raise your hand or wave to a friend.

In addition to cosmetic benefits, liposuction may also come with health advantages. For patients with high triglycerides, at least one study found the procedure to result in a 43 percent reduction of triglycerides in the bloodstream three months after treatment. The same study revealed a decrease in white blood cell count by 11 percent. Whether you have high triglycerides or not, liposuction will make you look slimmer, which may encourage you to get out and be more active. So, pick out some fresh workout gear to sport after your procedure, and enjoy showing off your newly toned figure at the gym.

Can the Fat Come Back?

Liposuction permanently gets rid of fat. However, it is possible for fat to return to areas that you have had treated. If you gain weight after your plastic surgery in Lubbock, your surgical results could diminish. Taking care of your body after plastic surgery is key to maintaining your new look. No special diets are required; just try to stick with a healthy lifestyle. Exercise regularly, eat healthy meals, and always drink plenty of water.

Liposuction for All

Whether you want to get rid of a small, localized deposit of fat or have multiple trouble spots across your body, your plastic surgeon can tailor your liposuction procedure to fit your exact needs. That’s part of the beauty of the surgery; it can sculpt, fine-tune, or makeover your entire figure. With the physical enhancement, patients also enjoy the soaring confidence that comes when they feel more comfortable in their own skin. If you are ready to toss out your tight contouring underwear and those baggy old shirts, consider how the many benefits of liposuction could change your life for the better.

What You Should Consider Before Your Plastic Surgery in Lubbock

Plastic surgery has become popular for both the young and old in the U.S., and the trend is likely to continue for the long term. According to the latest statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Americans spent $16.7 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2019 alone. Not only are more people having plastic surgery, they are also now more open than ever about their procedures. Changing times and social media have enabled men and women to feel more confident sharing the details of their cosmetic journeys. With plastic surgery being so accessible, you may have felt the desire to pursue a procedure such as a breast augmentation or tummy tuck. But, before you make the decision, you should take some time to think things through. Make sure you are in the right headspace, and do some real research on your doctor and your procedure. A little planning can go a long way, and when you’re getting ready for plastic surgery in Lubbock, it’s well worth the effort. Here are some of our tips for making sure you get the most out of your own cosmetic journey.

Select the Right Surgeon

The way we shop for things has changed a lot in the last several years. With online reviews and free shipping, you can easily buy just about anything without getting off your couch. “Shopping” for a doctor should require more effort. If you want the person responsible for your plastic surgery to be top of the line, you will have to do more than just browse reviews and click to add to your cart. Online ratings are a good starting point, but meeting with a few doctors, talking to friends and family, and doing research of your own will increase the likelihood of finding the right plastic surgeon.

Do Your Homework

Patients planning on having plastic surgery in Lubbock have several important decisions to make. Your results, safety, and care depend on the doctor you choose. You may have a handful of doctors in mind as you begin your research. Check out their websites, talk to anyone you know who recommends them (or doesn’t!), and then check up on them yourself.

You can review the doctor’s background by contacting the medical board of the state in which they practice. They should have a license in that state, and the medical board carries information on any disciplinary history as well as complaints against them. Keep in mind that if the surgeon has practiced in more than one state, you will need to look up their medical board history with each of those locations.

The Importance of Board-Certification

Anyone with a medical license can claim to be a cosmetic surgeon. With the popularity of plastic surgery ever on the rise, more and more doctors are deeming themselves fit to perform cosmetic procedures. If you trust an unqualified physician with your health and appearance, you could end up with a botched surgery or serious complications.

For this reason, it is essential that your doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The ABPS is the only organization recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify physicians in plastic and reconstructive surgeries. You can make sure your doctor is board-certified in plastic surgery by visiting the American Board of Medical Specialties’ website.

But what exactly does this certification mean? It means your surgeon has the credentials and training necessary to be qualified to perform plastic surgery in Lubbock safely. Your board-certified plastic surgeon will have the technical skills, medical knowledge, and aesthetic eye to give you a safe and positive experience. In addition, board-certified surgeons have hospital privileges and can operate out of accredited surgery centers. ABPS board-certification requires plastic surgeons to complete the following requirements:

  • Three to five years of general surgery training
  • Two to three additional years of plastic surgery training
  • Oral and written exams
  • Continuing education each year in the medical field
  • Written test every ten years

It is important to educate yourself so you can tell the difference between a doctor who is legitimately board-certified in plastic surgery and one who only claims to be. It is legal in many states for physicians to advertise plastic surgery when they are not properly qualified to do so. If you are considering a surgeon who says they are board-certified, make sure they are currently board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In Lubbock, Dr. Jane Rowley is board-certified by the ABPS and has the training, experience, and skills to give you the results you want. For more information on the importance of your doctor’s credentials, watch the video below.

Questions to Ask about Plastic Surgery in Lubbock

Part of your preparation for plastic surgery is getting answers to any questions you may have. Although you might be able to find some helpful resources online, the most reliable source of trustworthy information is your plastic surgeon. Write down your questions and bring them with you to your consultation. This is your chance to get a real feel for the person you will be trusting with your appearance and your safety. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor about anything that concerns you; there are no wrong or embarrassing questions! Consider the following for starters:

How much experience do you have with my procedure?

If you want to get a facelift, you will be able to have more confidence in a surgeon who performs them on a regular basis, rather than one who specializes in another area but is willing to do the surgery for you this time. A good follow-up to this question is finding out just how many times they have performed your procedure. Your doctor should confidently be able to provide you with their background concerning your procedure.

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

Do not be offended if your plastic surgeon’s answer is no. They are trying to protect you from something that would either not get you the results you want or would be unsafe. They may suggest an alternative or recommend waiting for a period of time. Dr. Rowley is honest and up-front with all of her patients. Out of respect and care for them, she always offers candid advice based on her extensive experience with plastic surgery in Lubbock. In general, a good candidate:

  • Does not smoke
  • Is in good overall health
  • Has realistic expectations for plastic surgery
  • Understands the risks associated with surgery

How do I prepare for my surgery?

Most plastic surgery procedures require patients to quit smoking before and after their operation; your doctor will advise you on the exact timetable. Be sure to reveal any and all medications, vitamins, and supplements you may be taking as some may interfere with the procedure. Learn about what to expect during your recovery period so you can plan ahead and be prepared to let your body heal properly. Other ways you can prepare for plastic surgery in Lubbock include:

  • Maintain a healthy, stable weight (no aggressive diets)
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol before your surgery
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery, and to stay with you for at least the first night
  • Coordinate pet and child care, if necessary
  • Stock your kitchen with easy meals and healthy snacks
  • Take care of bills, errands, and chores before surgery so you can take the time you need to rest
  • Carefully follow all of your doctor’s pre- and post-operative instructions

What happens if complications arise?

Find out who to contact should anything out of the ordinary happen after your plastic surgery in Lubbock. You will need to know what to do if certain side effects take place and if there will be additional costs for their treatment. The best way to minimize your level of risk is to choose a well-qualified plastic surgeon. However, even the best doctors have patients who develop complications, and these doctors follow strict protocols when such circumstances arise.

Interview Yourself

Finding the best surgeon and asking the right questions will go a long way toward helping you make the most of your plastic surgery in Lubbock. There are also some key questions you should ask yourself before you commit to it. Take some time to ponder your motives for seeking cosmetic changes. Are you trying to please someone else? Or are you interested in an enhancement that will give you more confidence? Patients who have procedures to help them feel better about themselves tend to be happier and more satisfied with their results.

You should also try to nail down your expectations for the procedure. How do you expect to look and feel when your surgery is complete? Plastic surgery cannot solve all your problems or give you the perfect body. If you want to have a procedure such as liposuction or a breast lift to achieve perfection, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. An experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Rowley can give you beautiful, natural results, but no doctor can make you completely flawless. Communicate your expectations for surgery clearly with your surgeon so that you are both on the same page.

Paying for Your Plastic Surgery in Lubbock

Since plastic surgery is considered elective and cosmetic, health insurance companies will not cover most procedures. Unless you are having a procedure such as a breast reduction or eyelid lift (which some policies will pay for), you will need to come up with the funding on your own. Plastic surgeons typically accept cash, credit cards, or offer different financing options. Be sure you can afford your procedure before you schedule it; you will not want to stress over finances while you are trying to recover after surgery. If you can’t quite fit plastic surgery into your budget just yet, there’s no harm in waiting until you have saved enough to go for it.

Talk with your plastic surgeon’s patient care coordinator to make sure you understand all of the costs associated with your procedure. In addition to the surgeon’s fee, you may be responsible for the anesthesiologist’s fees, the cost of the surgical center, and any post surgical recovery garments. Childcare, pet care, and time off work should also be factored in when calculating the total expense of your procedure.

Celebrate Your New Look

Research and preparation is important when you have plastic surgery in Lubbock, but so is planning a fun way to celebrate the new you! From body contouring to facial procedures, plastic surgery can provide a healthy self-esteem boost. So, buy a flattering swimsuit, try on some new bras, or you could even plan a trip to really enjoy your newfound confidence. Whether you do something extravagant or simple, a successful plastic surgery journey is something to celebrate.

Take the Next Step With Dr. Jane Rowley

There’s a lot to think about before you dive into the decision to have plastic surgery. If you care about the safety and final results of your cosmetic procedure, you need to put in the time to find the right doctor. Plastic surgery gone wrong is not an easy thing to fix. Doing your homework now will save you time, money, and headaches down the road. Remember the following when planning your plastic surgery in Lubbock:

  • Get referrals from family and friends

Flatten Your Belly With a Tummy Tuck in Lubbock

As women, we often dedicate our lives to our families. As mothers, this also means we give our bodies. Do you remember the you before you had kids? Back before you ever referred to your stomach as your “belly?” Even before your bra came with extra clips and hooks to accommodate someone else’s eating schedule? It may be a bit foggy (let’s not even get started on all those sleepless nights), but try for a moment to remember how you felt about your body before any of the changes that came with having a baby—the things you took for granted. While you may not be able to do anything about those lost nights of sleep, and life chooses a lot of things for you, you also have choices. You CAN reclaim your body with a tummy tuck in Lubbock.

Women who have had children sometimes struggle in their efforts to restore the body they enjoyed before motherhood. It often takes more than a new diet and exercise routine to reverse the effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Of course those habits are highly beneficial and should be part of your healthy lifestyle, but the reality is, they often cannot solve the problem of flabby skin leftover from childbearing. A tummy tuck easily gets rid of loose skin that won’t disappear even after you reach your pre-pregnancy weight, no matter how much you diet or exercise.

Options for a “Mommy Makeover”

Many women choose to combine procedures in a “mommy makeover” to cover several areas of concern at once. In addition to trimming your waist with a tummy tuck in Lubbock, you can consider breast and body contouring procedures to regain a youthful look. Rejuvenate your bustline with a breast lift, breast augmentation, or maybe a breast reduction, if that’s right for you. You can also opt to have liposuction to target those troublesome fat pocket areas that have developed over time. Being able to pick and choose your procedures enables you to have a personalized plastic surgery plan that meets your needs.

Maybe the makeover won’t turn back the clock entirely, but it sure can help bring back the look and confidence you once had. Plastic surgery enables many women to build upon their self-esteem as they enhance the features that make them feel the most beautiful. Having children doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your body or live forever with the physical changes that took place. You can be you again, the you that you remember.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a “[t]ummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.” Simply put, a tummy tuck gets rid of flabby skin and tightens abdominal muscles to give you the flat tummy you want. If you have unsightly stretch marks on your lower abdomen, a tummy tuck in Lubbock can also make those disappear. Abdominoplasty is for patients who are unhappy with sagging skin and fat on their midsection, which is often caused by events such as massive weight loss or pregnancy. It is a procedure that can have dramatic results that benefit your appearance, body image, and even your health.

What Happens During Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Abdominoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure, taking about two hours under general anesthetic. The surgery is performed through a low horizontal abdominal incision. The length of the incision depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. Patients who have had a C-section may be able to have their tummy tuck incision incorporated into their existing scar. Next, the skin is elevated off of the abdominal muscles, and it is redraped and excised. Abdominal muscles are tightened at the same time with permanent sutures in multiple layers. To achieve a symmetrical, natural look, a standard tummy tuck in Lubbock also involves the repositioning of the navel and the skin around it.

If you have excess fat on the hips or thighs, your plastic surgeon can perform liposuction for additional contouring at the same time as your abdominoplasty. Every body is unique and every patient has different expectations, and a tummy tuck can be personalized to fit your individual needs. Talk to your doctor about your goals so your plastic surgery can be tailored specifically for you.

Why Choose to Have a Tummy Tuck in Lubbock

When you feel healthy, eat right, and get regular exercise, it can be frustrating to see loose skin and belly flab persist despite your efforts. Don’t give up on those important habits; instead, consider how a tummy tuck could complement your healthy lifestyle.

Abdominoplasty has a very high rate of satisfaction among Dr. Jane Rowley’s patients. The procedure flattens and firms the tummy while repairing weakened abdominal muscles simultaneously. For more information on what to expect from your tummy tuck in Lubbock, check out the informative video below.

Diastasis Recti Correction

Before you had children, you probably understood that pregnancy would cause your feet to swell and your waist to expand. But, did you know about the potential for diastasis recti? Many mothers and people who have lost a significant amount of weight experience a separation of the abdominal muscles, called diastasis recti. A 2016 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that 60 percent of women experienced diastasis recti during or after pregnancy. The condition often results in a belly pooch and can make a woman appear as though she is still pregnant even after the baby has arrived. Diastasis recti is mostly cosmetic in nature, but it can also cause discomfort such as bloating, constipation, lower back pain, and poor posture.

It is important to seek your doctor’s advice if you think you may have separation between your abdominal muscles. Avoid doing traditional ab workouts like sit-ups and crunches, because they can actually worsen the condition. Some patients have found moderate success with yoga or other special exercises, but the only way to fully resolve diastasis recti is through surgery. Many of Dr. Rowley’s plastic surgery patients have found relief from the condition with a tummy tuck in Lubbock.

What to Consider Before Your Tummy Tuck

The choice to have plastic surgery is a personal one that requires introspection, research, and planning. Just because you have a belly pooch does not mean you should dive right in to the decision to undergo a tummy tuck. If you feel strongly about enhancing your body through plastic surgery, consider taking some time to evaluate your motives, goals, and expectations. The first questions you should ask yourself if you are considering a tummy tuck in Lubbock are “Why do I want plastic surgery?” and “What am I expecting from this procedure?”

These two factors will impact how happy you’ll be with the results. It’s important to examine your motivations for plastic surgery to make sure it’s the right choice for you. From larger procedures like a mommy makeover to smaller ones like submental liposuction, all can have profound effects on your life and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Motivation

First, look at your motivations for having plastic surgery. Is it something you’ve always wanted for yourself, or is it something someone close to you has been pestering you about, but not something you’re as interested in? If it’s the latter, you should think twice before proceeding. Drastic life changes should always be done because it’s something you want for yourself, not something someone else wants you to do. Permanently changing your appearance to please someone else can lead to resentment or regret in the future.

If you want to have a tummy tuck in Lubbock because you believe it will help you achieve your personal goals, you likely have healthy motivations for pursuing plastic surgery. Having the right mindset from the very beginning can make a big difference in the way you feel about your surgical outcome.

Expectations

At Rowley Plastic Surgery, we want you to pursue plastic surgery for the right reasons so you’ll be happy and satisfied with your results; but that’s only half of the equation. Having proper expectations is also very important to your overall satisfaction. Surgery can’t turn you into a different person or make you look like someone in a magazine. If you expect perfection, you will be disappointed–-no one is perfect, so welcome to the club! At the same time, we can all improve, and a tummy tuck in Lubbock gives us options that diet and exercise can’t. So, focus on progress and improvement, not perfection. The latter simply doesn’t exist.

These are just a couple of reasons why the initial consultation is so important. From ear-pinning to a mommy makeover, each procedure and each patient is unique with different needs to be discussed. Dr. Rowley takes her time with her patients to discuss their expectations and answer all their questions. The more clearly you can communicate your hopes for your procedure, the more she can help you achieve your specific goals.

Benefits of Abdominoplasty

It’s easy to imagine the aesthetic benefits of a tummy tuck in Lubbock. After all, you can just look at those old photos and remember what it was like to fit into your favorite skinny jeans. What you might not know is that for women who are mothers, a tummy tuck can have multiple physical health benefits. A recent study of women who had postnatal abdominoplasty showed a marked reduction in back pain and urinary incontinence, common results of pregnancy and childbirth:

“The study included 214 women undergoing abdominoplasty with repair of the abdominal muscles . . . . The women’s average age was about 42 years, with an average of 2.5 deliveries.

“Before and after surgery, the women completed questionnaires rating their disability from back pain and urinary incontinence . . . about 51 percent of women had moderate to severe disability from back pain, while urinary incontinence was a ‘significant concern’ for 42.5 percent.

“On follow-up questionnaires . . . only nine percent of patients still had moderate disability from back pain. Urinary incontinence remained a significant problem for less than two percent of women.”

In addition to women who have had children, people who achieve weight loss make up a significant proportion of tummy tuck candidates. These patients also experience health benefits with abdominoplasty. A 2017 study added to the literature which suggests a positive correlation between abdominoplasty and improvement in urinary incontinence. Patients with preoperative urinary incontinence symptoms reported a significant decrease in their symptoms and a positive impact on their quality of life. If you have felt embarrassed about your ability to control your bladder, abdominoplasty may be the right solution for you. A tummy tuck in Lubbock can help you take back control of both your appearance and your health.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Every abdominoplasty procedure is different, and so is every patient’s recovery. Most patients will need to have a drain placed for the first week or so following surgery. Dr. Rowley will prescribe medication to help control your post-operative pain. Depending on your body type and the amount of skin that is removed, you could bounce back fairly quickly or your healing period might last a little longer. Most patients can return to work in about 2 to 3 weeks. After a tummy tuck in Lubbock, full activity is typically resumed after 6 to 8 weeks.

The Importance of Breast Implant Safety and Breast Revision Surgery

Sometimes it is necessary for a woman to undergo breast revision surgery following her breast augmentation. While breast augmentation surgery is known for its high satisfaction rating, there are a variety of medical or aesthetic reasons that can cause a woman to pursue breast revision surgery. Dr. Jane Rowley is a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than two decades performing this complex surgery. As an advocate of breast implant safety, she can help you achieve beautiful results using the latest in implant technology.

The Goal of Breast Revision Surgery

Breast revision surgery is specifically intended for patients that already have breast implants, but are not happy with their current condition, look, or feel. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons website explains breast revision surgery:

“The goal of breast implant revision surgery is to replace old breast implants with new implants. Often the goal is also to change or improve the appearance of the breasts while updating the implant material, which could include:

  • A concurrent breast lift or reduction
  • Reshaping the breast implant pocket to reposition the implant on the chest
  • Either increasing or decreasing the size, shape or style of the breast implant”

Breast Implant Safety Reasons for a Breast Revision

No surgery comes without risk, breast augmentation included. Post-operative complications can arise that require a breast revision. Before performing any procedure, Dr. Rowley uses the consultation process to educate her patients about potential risks, breast implant safety, and the safety of silicone implants. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons website further states:

“The desire to have breast implant revision surgery can be because of any of the following reasons:

  • Desire to change the size of the breasts
  • Pain from capsular contracture
  • Concern about rupture or migration of implant
  • Change from saline to silicone or different style of implant

Over time, breast implants can change shape or size, and the overlying breast tissue can also change, creating an appearance or feel to the breast that is less desirable than the original result.”

Safety of Silicone Implants and Implant Rupture

Implant rupture is an important reason to pursue breast revision surgery. While any type of breast implant can develop a hole or tear, implant ruptures vary in severity.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants: Women with silicone gel implants face the inherent risk of experiencing a “silent rupture”, leaving many women to worry about the safety of silicone implants. A “silent rupture” occurs when an implant ruptures but goes undetected for a time, even years. Sticky silicone gel then leaks from the implant and gets trapped in the surrounding tissue. During a breast revision to replace the damaged implant, the silicone gel must be entirely removed and cleaned out. Furthermore, a physical exam alone is not enough to determine if a silicone gel implant has ruptured. An MRI scan is required which is why the FDA recommends all women with silicone gel implants receive an MRI the third year following breast augmentation, then every two years thereafter for the life of their implants.

Saline Breast Implants: When a saline implant ruptures, the implant deflates and a woman can notice the difference right away. A simple look in the mirror is all it takes to detect rupture. The sterile saltwater solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body until the implant is replaced. Many women report this provides an irreplaceable peace of mind about their breast implant safety.

IDEAL IMPLANTS® Structured Breast Implants: This is an innovative breast implant option exclusively available to a select group of board-certified plastic surgeons such as Dr. Rowley. Dr. Rowley was recently named an IDEAL IMPLANT Premier Surgeon for her extensive work with this new, unique kind of breast implant. With no risk of “silent rupture”, their internal structure is designed to address the safety of silicone implants. IDEAL IMPLANTS are made up of a series of shells nested together that hold two separate chambers filled with saline. This means a rupture is easily detected, no MRI is needed, nor will an implant completely deflate until the implant is replaced.

About Capsular Contracture

Another reason for breast revision surgery happens when a woman develops scar tissue around an implant referred to as a capsular contracture. The scar tissue creates several problems including breast pain, hardening of the breast, and an abnormal look to the breast.

A recent study compared the risk of implant rupture and capsular contracture between three brands of silicone gel implants and IDEAL IMPLANTS. The IDEAL IMPLANT showed a substantially lower risk of major complications following primary breast augmentation compared to silicone gel implants.

“The risk of implant rupture or deflation with IDEAL IMPLANT at eight years after primary breast augmentation was only 2.1% in comparison to silicone gel implants from Allergan (7.4%), Mentor (13.6%), and Sientra (7.2%) based on MRI scans …

IDEAL IMPLANT rates of Baker class III/IV capsular contracture at 8 years after primary augmentation were low at 6.6%, compared to silicone gel implants from Allergan (16.2%, 7 yr), Mentor (10.9%, 8 yr), and Sientra (11.2%, 8 yr).”

Is a Lubbock Breast Lift Right For You?

Breast enhancement surgery is one of the top plastic surgery procedures performed today, whether that includes an augmentation, lift, or reduction. Many women choose to receive breast implants and get a breast lift at the same time to achieve the ultimate look they desire. With more than twenty years of experience, Dr. Jane Rowley can help you determine the best approach to reaching your goals, and if a Lubbock breast lift and augmentation is the right choice for you.

Why Consider a Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift

Women want breast augmentation and breast lift surgery in Lubbock for a variety of reasons. If you are trying to figure out what route to take, knowing why you want plastic surgery, learning about what it can and cannot accomplish, then educating yourself on the overall process is a good place to begin.

Why pursue a breast augmentation? Dr. Rowley suggests breast implants if you have:

  • A desire to return to pre-pregnancy breast volume and appearance.
  • Concern over breast asymmetry, with one side visibly smaller in appearance.
  • Lack of breast tissue–a desire for larger breasts in general.

Why include a Lubbock breast lift? Dr. Rowley recommends this option for women that have:

  • Loss of breast volume and ptosis (droopiness), especially after pregnancy or massive weight loss.
  • Ptosis or droop of the nipple-areolar complex.
  • Loss of volume of the breasts

A Breast Augmentation With Dr. Rowley

Dr. Rowley works hard to ensure her patients know what to expect before and after surgery. She wants women to be educated about the process, so they can feel comfortable with their decision to receive breast implants. She explains:

“This is typically an outpatient surgery under general anesthetic and takes approximately an hour. The surgery is performed in the office operating room or an outpatient surgery center. Most people return to work in 2-3 days, with 4-6 weeks before returning to full physical activity … This procedure is typically done through a small incision about two inches long, usually underneath, in the crease of the breast. Saline and silicone implants are both available. Usually, they are placed in a submuscular position underneath the pectoral muscle. Pain is variable and depends on the muscle laxity. Pain pills and muscle relaxants are given after the procedure.  While recovery varies from individual to individual, complications are minimal. However, long-term problems such as leak and capsular contracture may occur.”

A Mastopexy – Breast Lift Surgery in Lubbock

Some women prefer breast lift surgery in Lubbock in addition to their breast augmentation. Dr. Rowley outlines what to expect:

“This procedure generally takes 90 minutes to two hours and is done under general anesthetic in the office operating suite or a surgicenter. Most patients will need 5-10 days off work and 4-6 weeks for full recovery and return to full activity … In a mastopexy, the nipple-areolar complex is always repositioned or lifted and skin is then removed to tighten the breast skin envelope. The amount of scarring depends on the amount of ptosis or droop of the breasts. Scars can be minimized by making a scar only around the areola (called a periareolar mastopexy). However, more extensive scarring may be necessary, including a vertical scar and possibly an inframammary scar to excise (remove) more skin. An implant may be placed at the time of the mastopexy to correct loss of volume. Nicotine restrictions also apply to this procedure.”

Setting Clear Expectations with a Lubbock Breast Lift

For those seeking breast lift surgery in Lubbock, Dr. Rowley makes sure she openly communicates the dynamics of a mastopexy. She explains how prior breast volume highly affects the outcome of a Lubbock breast lift. Dr. Rowley says:

“Unfortunately, many patients who come in seeking a mastopexy expect their breasts will look as if they never had big breasts to start with. In other words, they hope to look like a small-breasted person who has had implants. However, once you have had breast tissue followed by a volume loss, it is very difficult to make breasts look like someone who was never big-breasted to start with. It is very important that patients have a realistic view of this procedure. Tightening the skin and placing an implant are opposing forces, and the laws of physics are not on our side. As we tighten the skin to lift the breasts, the implant will oppose that, and tend to weigh them back down. In addition, these patients may have very thin, inelastic skin to start with, and patients who desire a very large implant may face difficulty with recurrent droop or recurrent ptosis because of the skin quality. It is very important to me to spend a long time talking to my patients about what they are hoping for and set realistic expectations with this procedure so they can have a positive outcome.”

Breast Augmentation: A Popular Plastic Surgery Option

There are numerous plastic surgery options available nowadays, but breast augmentation continues to be the most popular choice. Recent data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) concluded that breast augmentation was the leading cosmetic surgical procedure in 2017, with 300,378 total procedures performed.

Why are so many women deciding to receive breast implants? The ASPS reports 98% percent of women say their breast augmentation results met or exceeded their expectations, with many seeing improved self-esteem and a better quality of life. So while breast augmentation has high patient satisfaction ratings, it is important for women to understand it is still a surgical procedure that comes with limitations.

Is Breast Augmentation Right For You?

Do you want breast implants, but no sure if you are a good candidate for breast augmentation? Wondering what to expect following breast augmentation recovery? The ASPS website says:

“Breast augmentation is a deeply personal procedure, and it’s important that you’re doing it for yourself and not for someone else, even if that person has offered to pay for it. Patient satisfaction is high, specifically when they want the procedure themselves. You may be a candidate for breast augmentation if:

  • You are physically healthy and you aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have realistic expectations
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
  • You are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss or with aging
  • You are unhappy with the upper part of your breast appearing “empty”
  • Your breasts are asymmetrical
  • One or both breasts failed to develop normally or have an elongated shape

If you’re considering surgery, spend some time reviewing breast augmentation photos and learning about what to expect during recovery. Preparation ahead of time helps patients have reasonable expectations and a smoother recovery.”

Discussing your Plastic Surgery Options with Dr. Rowley

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jane Rowley has extensive experience performing breast augmentation surgery. She understands that because every body is unique, each patient needs individualized care and a customized treatment plan designed just for them. She reminds her patients that no two women can achieve the same results, and that bodies respond differently, even to the same procedure. During the consultation process, Dr. Rowley also explains to her patients the various plastic surgery options that will best fit their body type and lifestyle. Dr. Rowley states:

“Most people who seek breast augmentation come in with an idea of what cup size they would like to be postoperatively. However, cup size is extremely variable and often depends on the manufacturer of the undergarment. I think it is very important to spend a long time talking to my patients about what size they think they want to be. We look at multiple photographs, go through sample implants together, and I have patients try them on. I find it is not uncommon for someone to come in and say they want to be a C-cup, but when we go over it together, they find they like a little larger appearance, or may smaller, once they’ve tried them on. I do not want to trivialize this operation, but from a technical surgical standpoint, it is a relatively simple operation to do. The most difficult, and important, aspect of this procedure is making sure the patient has clear expectations. A skilled surgeon can make your breasts larger, but we cannot make your breasts look like someone else’s breasts. This is why I feel spending a long time discussing size together before the procedure is so important.”

Personalizing Your Breast Augmentation in Lubbock

Breast implants come in many sizes and shapes so you can choose the right look and style to fit your individual body type, personality, and aesthetic goals. The size of your implants is perhaps the most obvious decision you will have to make, yet there are several other aspects about your implants that can be personalized. The variety of choices is a good thing for patients having breast augmentation in Lubbock, but it can begin to feel overwhelming. Understanding your options is the first step to making sure you get the results you want from plastic surgery. It is also important to talk to your surgeon and discuss your expectations so you are completely understood before your breast augmentation.

Breast Augmentation Trends

Hollywood used to give us the impression that breast augmentation was only for women who wanted very large, round breasts. Today, most women get breast implants to enhance their natural femininity and want to avoid an artificial or fake appearance. Because of this, smaller, more natural-looking implants are increasing in popularity. Many of our patients lead busy, active lifestyles and they need their breast implants to complement the way they live. Before having breast augmentation in Lubbock, your surgeon will want you to consider your body shape and think about the breast implant size and shape that suits you. With the help of your surgeon, you can choose a breast implant size and shape that will be the perfect fit.

Breast Implant Shape

Round breast implants are the most popular implants women choose for breast augmentation in Lubbock. They can be filled with saline or silicone gel. These implants also have different projection styles. Round implants give more cleavage and lift for women. This lift is in both the lower and upper region of the breast where the breast generally doesn’t have fullness without implants. Some people feel implants with upper lift can appear less natural, but depending on your figure and preferences, they could be the right choice for you.

Breast implants also come in teardrop shape. These implants have a slope to them so they are more filled out on the bottom of the breast, which resembles the shape of a natural breast. These breast implants have a textured surface that will help keep them in place while healing so they do not rotate and look distorted. Talk to your doctor about teardrop-shaped breast implants to see if they can give you a more natural look with subtle enhancement.

Surgical Options for Breast Augmentation in Lubbock

You will have two different options for the placement of your implant in conjunction with your own tissue and muscle. Submuscular placement puts the implant underneath the chest muscle. Breast implants that are beneath the pectoral muscle can look more natural, as the overlying muscle helps create the slope that real breasts have. Mammograms are also easier to read with breast implants under the muscle. Recovery from this type of breast augmentation in Lubbock may require a little more time than if your implants were placed over the muscle, but the more natural look and feel might just be worth it for you.

The placement of breast Implants over the chest muscle is called subglandular placement. With this type of procedure, your implants may appear more visible. Studies have found higher rates of capsular contracture in patients with subglandular placement as well. Your breast enhancement goals, body type, and the type of implant all contribute to this decision, so talk to your doctor about which type of placement is best for you.

Consider Your Motivation

Maybe you have lost some weight and your breast size is now smaller. Or, maybe your body shape allows clothes to fit well around your hips but fits too loosely around your chest. Perhaps you feel your breast size is too small in proportion to the rest of your body. Maybe you feel your breasts are noticeably smaller than those of other women. Some women have noticeable asymmetry in their breasts. Breast implants can solve all of these issues. If you can clearly explain your concerns to your doctor, you will have a better chance of correcting the problems and getting the results you want.
